We enter quietly through Gaztelu, leaving the main roads behind as the valley of Doneztebe–Donamaria opens up, green and unhurried. A simple coffee stop grounds us before continuing deeper into the landscape, toward a place where forest and water have learned to coexist.
Leurtza reservoir appears almost by surprise, embraced by a dense beech forest that has gradually reclaimed the structure itself. Reflections ripple gently across the water’s surface, the air feels cleaner, and the noise of modern life seems to fall away on its own. Here, nothing is required of you. Walk the path that circles the water, sit in stillness among the trees, take a refreshing swim on warmer days, or simply let the surroundings reset your senses. Connectivity fades—presence returns.
The journey continues along little-traveled mountain tracks through Malerreka and the Bortziriak, crossing small rural villages and scattered farmsteads where time is measured by season and tradition rather than clocks. We descend back into Donamaria for a relaxed lunch in a local restaurant before making our way home, carrying with us the quiet weight of a landscape that asks nothing, yet gives generously.
