Whalers’ Paths, Facing the Atlantic

Reading the Basque coastline through watchtowers, sea routes and maritime memory.

This walk explores how the Basque coastline was historically observed, interpreted and used—long before it became a place of passage or leisure.

Jaizkibel rises quietly above the Atlantic, a small mountain shaped by wind, salt and centuries of watchful presence. Before this coastline was crossed for leisure, it was read from above. From these slopes, lookouts—talaiak—once scanned the sea for whales, giving name to the coastal path that still traces their line of sight.

These lookout points were not scenic—they were functional, forming part of a coastal system of observation, communication and survival.

This walk follows that shore in the opposite direction, moving eastward against the grain of the Talaia trail and the traditional flow of the Way of St. James. The sea remains open and constant, while the land reveals itself slowly—rugged, austere, deeply familiar.

The route adapts to rhythm and condition. One option stays closer to the edge, crossing wild coves, wind-swept grasslands and rock formations shaped by centuries of exposure. The other moves inland through young chestnut and pine forests, offering a softer passage with distant views of the same Atlantic horizon. Different paths, same coastline, same memory held in the land.

Walking here is an act of attention. To the wind, to the movement of the sea, to the quiet intelligence of a landscape once observed for survival rather than contemplation.

The descent brings us naturally toward Hondarribia, where the mountain yields to harbor, and the long relationship between coast and community becomes tangible again. The day closes with local food—simple, rooted, and shaped by proximity—allowing body and place to come back together.

Some paths were first walked not to admire the sea, but to understand it—and they still ask us to do the same.

This journey belongs to a deeper layer of the territory. Not everything reveals itself to the first gaze.
