Hondarribia & Origins of Txakoli

Wine shaped by sea, mountain and border

Hondarribia is more than one of the Basque Country’s most beautiful and distinctive coastal towns—it is a crossroads of sea routes, borders, agriculture and history.

This private coastal journey begins with panoramic views over the Bay of Biscay and the Basque-French coast, before following a gentle mountain path along the inner slopes of Mount Jaizkibel. As we walk, landscape becomes narrative: Roman ports, medieval conflicts, whale fishing, txakoli & cider, and the rebirth of vineyards on Jaizkibel’s sheltered slopes, reached along a winding hillside track.

The path leads us to a Txakoli winery, where the native Hondarribia grape finds its most natural expression. A tasting, paired with tapas, focuses on freshness, acidity and identity.

The day concludes in Hondarribia itself, on the Basque coast, strolling through the medieval old town and fishermen’s quarter—where history feels lived rather than displayed.

Along the Basque coast, wine takes on a distinct expression — one that forms part of a broader cultural landscape explored across the region.

Further inland, wine follows a different logic — shaped less by the sea, and more by historical continuity and structure.

Txakoli thrives where sea air meets sheltered slopes along the Basque coast.
