Green Heights, Ancient Ground
A ridge walk where scale, silence and ancient traces shape the perception of the landscape
This walk explores the Basque landscape at a different scale—where distance, elevation and exposure allow for a deeper perception of time, silence and terrain.
This is the longest walk of the section, though not the most demanding. A sustained, unhurried journey along the high ridges that trace the natural boundaries between Artikutza, Lesaka, Goizueta and Arantza—a place where forest, pasture and horizon meet.
The ridge is not simply a path, but a line of transition—where valleys, forests and highlands meet and can be understood as a continuous system.
We begin near Eskas, entering a dense woodland of beech, oak and fir, crossed by small streams of remarkably clear water. Gradually, the forest opens and the landscape breathes: at certain points, the Atlantic appears in the distance, with Saint-Jean-de-Luz faintly visible on clear days, before the view turns inward again toward the deep green mass of Artikutza.
The route follows an ancient line of passage. Dolmens and cromlechs emerge quietly along the way, reminders that these mountains were never empty, only sparsely spoken. The path continues across open ground and gentle undulations, always guided by the logic of the land rather than speed.
Eventually, the walk descends into the Arantza valley, passing farmhouses, grazing sheep and open meadows where time seems to loosen its grip. The journey concludes in the village itself, with a well-earned meal at a local rural restaurant before returning.
The walk can be adapted in length when needed, without altering its essence.
Some landscapes are not defined by what they show, but by the scale at which they are experienced—and the time they require to be understood.
This journey belongs to a deeper layer of the territory.
