Bucolic Borderlands
Pastoral landscapes and living Basque heritage
This journey offers a first encounter with the rural French Basque Country, where language, architecture and landscape still express a deeply rooted way of life.
We visit Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a medieval walled town founded by the Kings of Navarre and the official starting point of the Camino de Santiago, followed by quiet pastoral views in the valley of Bidarray. The route continues through Espelette and Ainhoa, villages where everyday life remains closely tied to the land and to forms of small-scale production that are carefully protected and quietly valued—particularly in France—for their integrity and origin.
A calm, scenic exploration of a borderland where identity is preserved not through spectacle, but through continuity, restraint and respect for place.
In these softer landscapes, the Basque Country reveals its most enduring voice.
