A slow river walk through living traditions, soundscapes and rural continuity
This walk unfolds deep in the Malerreka valley, where water, land and ritual still shape daily life. From Elgorriaga to Zubieta, a gentle path follows the course of the Ezkurra river for roughly nine kilometers, accompanied at every step by the sound of flowing water and the dense green of ferns, orchards and meadows where sheep still graze.
The route passes through small villages such as Ituren, crossing a landscape that remains profoundly rural—humid, fertile and quietly sustained by proximity to the land. This is a valley where ancient traditions endure, most famously the Joaldunak and Joariak carnival figures, whose bells still mark the turning of the year in one of Europe’s oldest living ritual cycles.
Walking slowly upstream, we reach a restored water mill where local corn is still ground as it has been for generations. When possible, a visit allows us to understand how these seemingly modest structures once formed the backbone of an entire way of life.
At the end of the walk, time is left to rest before we regroup and head to a local restaurant, where the landscape continues its story at the table.
Here, the land is read by following water, season after season.
