Along the Pilgrim’s Way
Reading the Camino through landscape and memory
This journey follows the historic Camino de Santiago not as a physical challenge, but as a cultural and symbolic route embedded in the land. More than a medieval road, the Camino remains a living geography—walked today by those seeking reflection, transition, or a pause from ordinary time.
We begin in Donibane Garazi (Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port), the first official starting point of the pilgrimage. From here, instead of walking the arduous first stage, we ascend comfortably by mountain road, tracing the same route pilgrims have followed for centuries. The climb reveals wide horizons and dramatic landscapes that explain why this territory has long been associated with endurance, solitude and resolve.
Crossing the high pass and descending toward Roncesvalles, we enter a place shaped by legend, battle and hospitality. For centuries, this monastery complex has offered shelter to pilgrims arriving from the mountains, marking both an end and a beginning.
The journey continues to Burguete, where we pause for lunch before returning—having read the Camino not with our feet, but with our eyes, our stories, and our sense of place.
Not all pilgrimages are walked—some are understood.
